LGBT Parents and Children: When Reality Sets In

There is nothing--absolutely nothing--that shields us gay parents from being like every other kind of parent in this world: gay or straight. With our more-public outting as married couples, partners in civil unions, domestic partnership possibilities, and with our adopting, having foster children, becoming guardians of other people's children, and having children naturally, our separating and divorcing is as screwed up and messy and un-seemly as every other kind of couple.

This truth was brought home recently in this article from 365gay.com, in which Hyett and Eric--who were a couple, and adopted Jedidiah--separated, with Eric taking off with Jedidiah without telling Hyett. The messy court case is now going on.

Lesson? Our families are similar to every other kind of family.
